The tradition of the birthday cake dates back to ancient times. The earliest birthday cakes were made by the ancient Egyptians, who celebrated the pharaoh's birthday by presenting cakes made of honey and nuts. In Greece, people baked cakes in honor of Artemis, the goddess of the moon, and decorated them with candles to represent the moon's light. The custom of blowing out candles, however, has its roots in German history. In the 18th century, Germans began baking cakes for children’s birthdays, known as "Kinderfeste." The cakes were often round and decorated with candles, which were lit to symbolize life and light. Children were then tasked with blowing out the candles to make a wish. This tradition spread across Europe and eventually became a global custom. As time went on, birthday cakes evolved into the layered, decorated cakes we know today, influenced by advancements in baking and the availability of sugar and other ingredients. In the 19th century, the concept of frosting and intricate cake designs emerged, allowing bakers to create the show-stopping cakes that are now a centerpiece at birthday celebrations.
